Partner Update
More business-class saver space is appearing on transatlantic partners for September–November dates.
You earn MileagePlus miles from United flights, co-branded United credit cards, and — most powerfully — by transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt points in at 1:1. Because Chase is a transfer partner, anyone with a Sapphire or Ink card effectively earns United miles without flying United.
United uses dynamic pricing on its own flights, so prices move with cash fares — sometimes cheap, sometimes brutal. Partner awards (Lufthansa, ANA, Swiss, Turkish, and more) are priced more predictably and are where the real value lives, especially in business and first.
On a round-trip or multi-city award that starts and ends in the same region, United throws in one free one-way segment inside a different region. Used well, it turns one award into an extra flight for zero miles.
United charges no fuel surcharges on any partner — a major edge over booking the same seat through programs that do. Expect only modest taxes. A close-in booking fee may apply within 21 days of departure for some members.
United's own website doesn't always display every partner's award space; some Star Alliance partners (like some ANA or Swiss first-class seats) show better elsewhere. And dynamic pricing means the same seat can cost wildly different amounts day to day.
Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, and Brussels business class from ~88,000 miles round-trip when saver space is available — with no fuel surcharges, unlike booking through some European programs.
ANA and EVA business class across the Pacific are consistently strong partner values, and United passes none of ANA's surcharges.
Stitch a free extra segment into a round-trip award — a within-Europe or within-Asia hop that would otherwise cost miles of its own.
United-operated awards track cash prices. Peak routes and dates can demand absurd mileage — always compare against partner options.
If a partner seat you know exists isn't showing on united.com, it may still be bookable by phone, or better priced through another Star Alliance program.
Premium partner awards are getting pricier. Lock in aspirational bookings before the change if the dates are firm.

CRITICALWhy it matters
United is quietly raising the miles needed on several premium-cabin partner routes. Bookings made before the change keep the old price.
What to do next
If a Star Alliance business or first booking is on your radar, price it now and ticket before August 1. Locked-in awards are safe.
