United expands economy meal preorder to flights over 900 miles
Synopsis
United is extending fresh-food preorder in Economy to flights over 900 miles across North America and the Caribbean. Eligible travelers can choose ahead through the app or website, but orders close 24 hours before departure and meal availability is not guaranteed.
What happened
United announced on October 19, 2026 that its Economy fresh-food preorder threshold is dropping from flights over 1,190 miles to flights over 900 miles across North America and the Caribbean. The airline names Chicago–Houston, Denver–San Francisco and Houston–Washington, D.C. among the additional routes.
According to United’s original announcement, customers can preorder fresh Bistro on Board selections and other eligible retail items from five days until 24 hours before departure. Options appear in the Trips section of united.com and in the United app, which sends a notification when preordering opens.
Impact
The practical benefit is being able to plan an onboard food choice before a shorter economy flight. United describes sandwiches, burgers, pasta and breakfast options, with selections rotating monthly. Check the options shown for your own flight rather than assuming a particular meal will be offered.
Keep the promise in proportion: United says preordered meals may be unavailable under certain circumstances. This is an expansion of access to retail food preorder; the announcement does not establish a free-meal entitlement or a lower price.
The Snob’s Take
A useful convenience, provided you act before the cutoff. Check your flight’s menu when the app prompts you, choose something you actually want, and keep a backup plan if eating onboard matters. A preorder is helpful; it is not a catering guarantee.
