United drops the flight-count route to Premier status in 2027 and raises the 1K threshold
WATCHWhat happened
United will remove the flight-count route to Premier status from January 1, 2027, leaving PQP thresholds and a four-flight minimum. Frequent flyers who relied on the lower-spend route will need more PQP, while Premier 1K’s points-only threshold rises to 32,000.
United is changing how MileagePlus members earn Premier status from January 1, 2027. In an announcement posted October 13, 2026, the airline confirmed that Premier qualifying flights, or PQF, will no longer form a separate qualification route. Members will qualify through Premier qualifying points, or PQP, while still taking at least four flights operated by United or United Express.
PQP are United’s status-qualifying points, distinct from redeemable MileagePlus miles. United says members can earn them through eligible travel on United, United Express and Star Alliance partners, or eligible United card spending. The new structure therefore does not mean every qualifying point must come from a United ticket.
The 2027 requirements are: Premier Silver: 6,000 PQP; Premier Gold: 12,000 PQP; Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQP; Premier 1K: 32,000 PQP.
Impact
The important change is the removal of the alternative that combines flight counts with a lower PQP requirement. In 2026, Silver can be earned with 5,000 PQP and 15 PQF, Gold with 10,000 PQP and 30 PQF, Platinum with 15,000 PQP and 45 PQF, and 1K with 22,000 PQP and 60 PQF.
For Silver, Gold and Platinum, the new thresholds match the existing PQP-only option. That is little comfort if you previously qualified using the lower-PQP route. Taking enough flights will no longer make that route available.
Premier 1K faces a second tightening: its existing PQP-only requirement is 28,000, rising to 32,000 in 2027. Members aiming for the top published tier will need to plan around the new threshold regardless of how many flights they take.
The four-flight minimum survives. Eligible partner activity can help members earn PQP, but members still need at least four United or United Express flights in 2027. A partner-heavy itinerary does not remove that requirement.
There is also a transition exception worth keeping separate from the general rule. United says select status challenges that began in 2026 and continue into 2027 will still require PQF where flight counts were part of the original challenge. Anyone in one of those offers should follow its specific requirements rather than assume the flights have been waived.
United’s announced starter deposits are 300 PQP for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K.
Eligibility depends on having an eligible card account open by December 31, 2026, with the account remaining open and not in default when the benefit is fulfilled. The deposit is based on the Premier status held on February 1, 2027. Members with trial status and United Debit Rewards Cardmembers are excluded, along with specified cards issued in Australia, Ecuador and Uruguay.
That matters for planning: a starter deposit should not be treated as automatic simply because you hold Premier status. Check the published card conditions before counting it toward your next qualification year.
United also confirms that, for travel on or after February 1, 2027, the number of PlusPoints required for an upgrade may vary with demand and available seats.
