American adds cash-and-miles bookings, with a catch if plans change
What happened
American is rolling out a way to put AAdvantage miles toward an eligible flight and pay the balance in cash. It can ease the cash bill. That alone does not make it a good use of your miles.
The current option is limited to flights marketed and operated by American within the contiguous United States. You need a valid U.S. home address in your profile, including eligible territories, and must meet the account requirements. Basic Economy and trips involving another airline are excluded. This is not a new way to book oneworld partner flights.
Impact
The sharper restriction is flexibility: voluntary changes require cancelling and booking again. Any refund depends on eligibility and fare rules; the cash portion of a non-refundable ticket may return as travel credit. More ways to pay do not necessarily mean more ways to change your mind.
Search normally on American’s website or app and inspect the checkout offer, if available. Check the cash fare, ordinary award option and cancellation terms before spending miles. Qualifying cash fare spending earns miles and Loyalty Points; government taxes and fees do not. We have not checked a member-specific offer.
